How to ‘insure’ Halloween doesn’t cause a financial fright

It’s scary how different this year’s Halloween festivities have been so far.

With Covid-19 restrictions firmly in place, many of the usual events and activities such as fireworks displays and trick-or-treating have been curtailed or cancelled.

But you should not let your guard down. When things go bump in the night, they often have an insurance risk attached.

Halloween is traditionally a busy time for insurance companies with a spike in claims at this time of the year relating to car damage, homes being vandalised and accidental damage.

We certainly don’t mean to sound like the ‘fun police’ and we acknowledge there are already a lot of restrictions to keep in mind this Halloween, but it is worth taking some practical steps to reduce your risk of having to make a claim in early November.

For example, some people consider throwing eggs on Halloween night a ‘rite of passage’ and while many view it as harmless fun, eggs can often dent car panels, break glass or chip paintwork. If you have a garage, you should consider locking your car away for the night or at least park it in a driveway and off the street.

If you are going out for the evening leave some lights on including an outside light. Generally, those who are up-to-no-good prefer to operate in the shadows so don’t make your home an ‘easy target’.

We are all staying closer to home this Halloween which means it is likely that more sparklers and indoor fireworks will be lit in gardens. It is important to always follow the safety instructions and matches should only be handled by a responsible adult. If you have a smoke alarm fitted, ensure it is working properly.

Although last Halloween night was the quietest for six years for the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, they still dealt with 77 emergency call outs and 51 operational incidents. It is vital that this service is not put under additional strain through unnecessary accidents.

While it is important to have the right level of insurance for your vehicle and property all year round, Halloween can bring this need into sharp focus.
