Brexit & Green Cards
From 1st January 2021 drivers in Northern Ireland require an insurance Green Card for any vehicle driven between the UK and any other EU/EEA member state, including the Republic of Ireland. The Green Card acts as your proof of insurance outside the UK. This will apply to all cars and motor vehicles including motorcycles, vans and commercial vehicles.
Drivers will need to carry a printed copy of the Green Card from 1st January 2021 when driving outside the UK (note, an electronic copy will NOT be acceptable).
Failure to present a valid Green Card when driving in the EU / EEA, including the Republic of Ireland may result in a fine or, in the event of an accident, loss of insurance cover.
What is a Green Card?
A Green Card is an international certificate of insurance. It proves that your UK motor insurance policy provides you with the minimum compulsory insurance cover required by the law of the country you are visiting.
Do I need a Green Card to drive in the Republic of Ireland?
Yes, motorists from Northern Ireland should prepare to carry a Green Card to drive in ROI from 1 January 2021.
Do I need to request a Green Card or will AbbeyAutoline issue one automatically?
If you are a new customer or an existing customer due for renewal, you will automatically receive a Green Card with your policy documentation. You do not need to contact us to request one.
However, if you are an existing customer who has not yet reached their renewal date you will need to contact us for a Green Card if you intend to drive in the EU/Republic of Ireland on or after 1st January 2021. To request a Green Card, please call us on 08000 66 55 44 or email email@example.com
Will I be provided with a physical copy of a Green Card?
Green Cards can be sent electronically via email or we can post a physical copy to you. The electronic copy should be printed at home and can be on white paper – green paper is not essential.
Will Green Cards be accepted electronically or is a physical copy required?
UK motorists must carry a physical copy of their Green Card when driving in Europe (including ROI). Green Cards will not be accepted in an electronic format, so drivers must print out their Green Cards or request a physical copy from their insurer before travelling.
Do drivers from ROI need a Green Card to drive in Northern Ireland?
No. Green cards will not be required by ROI policyholders’ vehicles coming into the UK.
Do you have to pay for a Green Card?
No, not at present.
Do I need a separate Green Card for my trailer or caravan?
Yes, motorists need both a Green Card for the towing vehicle and a separate one for the trailer / caravan (note also that motorists need separate trailer insurance in some countries).
