E10 Fuel (1)

Ways to help reduce the amount of fuel you use when driving

Northern Ireland is a nation dependent on cars, with over 80% of households having access to a car and as the rural population continues to grow, cars are a real lifeline for many to stay connected to amenities, family and friends.

Drivers across Northern Ireland are continuing to feel the impact of high fuel prices and with some filling stations hitting over £2 per litre, there are steps we can take to help reduce our fuel consumption:

Shop Around - Keep an eye on fuel prices in your area, go for the most economical and only top up what you need!

Drive Smoothly - Take into consideration the traffic ahead, accelerate gently. Braking suddenly can cause you to use more fuel.

Keep a steady speed - Try and avoid bursts and dips of speed as this will use more fuel.

Maintain your vehicle - Make sure tyres are inflated to the correct pressure. Regular maintenance and servicing improves your car’s efficiency.

Change gears earlier - Try changing gears slightly earlier than usual and driving in the highest gear within the speed limit.

Lighten the load - Remove any excess weight from the car, don’t leave items in the boot or remove roof racks, if they are not required.

Avoid the AC - Only use air conditioning when essential. It uses engine power resulting in the increase of fuel consumption.

Leave early - Take your time and don’t rush – avoid driving fast or at a sporadic speed to save on fuel.

Plan your route - Avoid taking a longer, unnecessary route. Plan your route or use a sat nav.

Limit journeys - Plan your week ahead, avoid taking more journeys than is necessary. Save running errands to as few journeys as possible.

Go Green - Consider an electric or hybrid vehicle if you are looking to change. Be sure to shop around to ensure you’re picking one with low emissions.
