It’s time to get creative for this year’s National BBQ Week. Bring out your deck chairs, mow the lawn and get prepping to host the ultimate barbecue. With lockdown restrictions starting to ease and the weather finally improving, it is time to get serious about barbecuing, and what better way to indulge in the perfect barbecue than supporting your local farmers and producers.
In Northern Ireland, we are blessed with a huge and delicious range of fresh, local produce that will contribute to that spontaneous barbecue. We’ve whipped up a couple of ideas to help you bring together the perfect barbecue while supporting local.
Farm Fresh Meat
We all know that the meat makes or breaks a barbecue so why not pay a visit to your local butcher for the very best in fresh meat. Not only will you be supporting your local farmers, but there is no comparison in the quality of meat you will get. In fact, some butchers may even provide marinated meats ready for the grill! If you don’t have time to go to your local butcher, there are multiple online options for you to explore. Head over to Hillstown Farm Shop online or Fletcher Meats to have the finest in grass-fed meats delivered direct to your doorstep.
Vegetarian? We’ve Got This!
To accommodate your vegetarian guests, why not switch out the meats with the country’s favourite cheese – halloumi – paired with some locally sourced vegetables… they won’t be disappointed! Warning – this delicious combination will be loved by non-vegetarian guests too! Check out these local shops for the finest local produce to tantalise your taste buds.
Add the Perfect Sides
A must-have, no barbecue is complete without the perfect side, or two, or three. Sometimes the simple sides can go a long way to pleasing your family and friends, so why not opt for a simple corn-on-the-cob, sweet potato fries or grilled cheese to complement your main event. And who doesn’t love a tasty salad packed full of fresh local vegetables. Check out Homegrown for some ideas of high quality fresh vegetables and ingredients to include.
Sweet Treats
And to finish off your barbecue in style, don’t forget to add some scrumptious sweet treats. If you have never tried barbecued chocolate and banana splits on the barbecue, you are missing a treat! Simply slice a banana lengthways, cover in chocolate, wrap in foil and grill on the barbecue. You will thank us for sharing this heavenly treat! Kids will love these traditional campfire treats – toasted marshmallows or the ever-popular smores, consisting of toasted marshmallows and a layer of chocolate between two digestives – both must-haves at every barbecue.
The local food scene has seen strong growth in recent years and this is just a small selection of the local products available in Northern Ireland. We encourage you to support all local producers and share your own favourite produce with us. Enjoy celebrating National Barbecue Week (2nd – 11th July 2021) with your own locally sourced products.
